Digital Storytelling

The above video is my digital story book on the life of an Emperor Penguin. I am a pre-k ESE teacher, and decided to create a lesson for second graders on the life of penguins. I asked my students to select one type of penguin out of 3 choices. Although the project is mainly for our science class, it also includes the subject areas of reading and technology.  I asked students to research their penguin via websites and links on our curriculum page.  Once they have gathered all their facts, they have been asked to then write their information into a “Dear dairy” format. They will then be asked to read their “dear diary” as a narrative for their digital story.  I am hoping my example provides my students with a good representation of what is expected from them.

Readers, please let me know what else I should include in my example. Is my lesson appropriate for second graders? Is it too easy or is it challenging?

Thank you!

  1. I like your digital storytelling project. I teach second grade but many of my students are low in reading and are at a first grade level. I think a student reading at grade level will do great at this activity. For students at a lower grade level in reading they can complete the same assignment they will just need more assistance from their parents or teacher.

  2. Great digital story! The sequence flowed very well and has a good pace. Using voice to tell the story is a great idea to help struggling readers. The pictures were clear and visually appealing. One thing I did not see was credits. Did I miss it, if I did, I apologize. If you did not include it, you may want to for future stories so that you model for the students. I understand they are in second grade and do not understand copyright, but if one student asks you have an opportunity to teach lesson about. Excellent Job!

  3. Great digital story project! I really enjoyed the vivid pictures and soothing music. It was just a little difficult to hear the narration over the music at some points. I really like how it was narrated from the baby penguin's point of view. I feel that it makes the presentation more personal that way, as opposed to, "The Emperor Penguin lives in Antarctica. The Emperor Penguin eats...." I also agree with Ziglesias in that this project would be great for 2nd graders who are on-level in reading. And for the students who are below-level, you could always enlist the help of the media specialist, teacher aides, and parent volunteers to assist those students. Great project Katy! Thank you for sharing :)

  4. I love this digital story telling project. I think you did a fantastic job with it! By having you narrate the story and do it in the point of view from a penguin, will definitely engage all viewers. It flowed nicely and I actually learned a lot from it. I wouldn't fix anything except maybe allow your students to choose the animals they may want to research on. I love this idea :)
